A group of hikers were rescued Tuesday after being stranded for days in the midst of the Soberanes wildfire raging outside of San Francisco, according to fire officials.
Officials say a wildfire burning near Big Sur has destroyed 34 homes as fire crews struggle to contain it.
The name and age of the operator was not immediately available.
No further information on the identity of the person who died or the circumstances around the death was immediately available.
A wildfire was fouling the summer season on a beloved and scenic stretch of the California coast, where smoke and the threat of flames forced the closure of state parks near Big Sur. 2000 structures remain threatened.
Firefighters working around the clock got a break early Wednesday from cooler temperatures and increased humidity.
Jim Newby, a Phoenix-area tourist, drove along the Pacific Coast Highway with his family and was disappointed at the smoke. “We didn’t see a whole lot of it unfortunately, and it’s a attractive, handsome stretch”.
The blaze could crest a ridge and make a run toward campgrounds, lodges and redwoods closer to the shore, officials said. The Los Angeles-area fire has destroyed 18 homes since it started and authorities over the weekend discovered a burned body in a auto identified Tuesday as a man who refused to be evacuated.
The so-called Sand Fire in Santa Clarita has covered 38,346 acres in Southern California and was 40 percent contained as of Wednesday morning, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.
Cal Fire Capt. Lucas Spelman tells KSBW-TV, “We are starting to get into the fatigue time because of so many days on the fire, and just continually fighting this fire aggressively does take its toll on firefighters”.
“We’re not really out of the woods”, said U.S. Forest Service spokesman Justin Correll.
It was 25 per cent contained.
The Big Sur closures were put into place for parks that draw 7,500 visitors daily from around the world for their dramatic vistas of ocean and mountains along Highway 1 near storied Monterey Bay.
