Misbah out for nought as England fight back
Cook hinted that England would use the sight of Pakistan’s jubilant post-match frolics as motivation for the second Test at Old Trafford, which starts on Friday, although the lack of batting nous was the principal cause of his anger.

Earlier in the day, England were bowled out for 272 runs early in the first session, conceding a first-innings lead of 67 runs.
England now needed to surpass their record fourth innings-winning chase in a Lord´s Test of 282 for three against New Zealand in 2004 if they were to go 1-0 up in this four-match series. “It’s really frustrating. We’ve lost before, we can bounce back”, Cook told Sky Sports after play. The seamer returned with three wickets from the match. A back of a length delivery gathered a feather edge off Alastair Cook’s bat on the way to the keeper and Alex Hales flirted with a delivery outside off, slashing it straight to the throat of first slip.
We had the side that was capable to beat Pakistan here, but that’s the beauty of a four-Test series.
“We’ve got to go back and talk about it but talk all you want it’s about delivering in the middle”.
Jonny Bairstow (28 not out) and all-rounder Chris Woakes (five not out) – who had already taken 11 wickets in this match – were still at the crease but with just the tail to come.
Such colourful celebrations – 42-year-old skipper Misbah-ul-Haq marked his day one century with press-ups of his own – are becoming a common theme.
“I’m disappointed that none of our batsmen pushed on today”.
Asad Shafiq anchored the second innings with Pakistan looking shaky and would be eventually dismissed for 49 after a strong partnership with Sarfraz Ahmed (45), with Yasir Shah ending the day’s play on 30 not out.
But a review showed the ball missing leg stump and Younis survived.
Mohammad Amir finished with two wickets in the end and it was the Pakistani pacer who clean bowled JT Ball to clinch the victory for Pakistan. James Vince hung in along with Gary Ballance to give England a chance to take the match to the final day.
Stuart Broad only managed to add six runs to his overnight total before he fell to a full inswinger from Wahab.
In between, Finn pushed forward to Yasir and missed to become the leg-spinner’s fourth lbw victim of the innings.
At tea, Pakistan were 111 for four in their second innings – a lead of 178 runs.
Amir had begun his six-wicket performance here in 2010 by claiming Cook as his first victim – and would have done so again, had Mohammad Hafeez not put down a straightforward edge at slip.
Azhar Ali joined Shan Masood to help the tourists to 40 for one at lunch – but Woakes was already posing plenty of problems, and he upped the ante in the afternoon.

The leg spinner got his second wicket as Moeen Ali was bowled while trying to slog the spinner out of the Lord’s ground.
