DNC 2016: 5 things to watch for Thursday

He was serious. He was amusing.

For this time, Hillary is uniquely qualified to seize the opportunities and reduce the risks we face, and she is still the best darn change-maker I have ever known.

“I move that Hillary Clinton be selected as the nominee of the Democratic Party for president of the United States”, Sanders announced, as the convention roll call reached his home state, a process where each state declares its delegate counts.

PHILADELPHIA – President Barack Obama painted an optimistic picture of America’s future in a rousing speech on Wednesday that offered full-hearted support to Hillary Clinton in her campaign to defeat Republican Donald Trump and become the first woman elected U.S. president. A Clatskanie man, in town to protest the convention for the “Bernie or Bust” crew, was interviewed for SNL’s DNC special.

This, of course, was the ideal way to tee up his critique of Trump.

“And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters, and all our sons and daughters, now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States”. We’re not a fragile people.

He challenged the vow Trump made last week in Cleveland, “I alone can fix it”, implying that the Republican nominee’s egotism is somehow un-American. We don’t look to be ruled. We battled for a year and a half.

He also took on Trump’s main calling card, his career. “He calls himself a business guy, which is true, but I have to say, I know plenty of businessmen and women who’ve achieved success without leaving a trail of lawsuits, and unpaid workers, and people feeling like they got cheated”.

The 42nd president also pointed out that while she was busy fighting to better the lives of Americans, she was “first and foremost a mother” to their daughter Chelsea.

As First Lady, she tried to push HillaryCare, which even many Democrats refused to back.

“How does this square with the things that you heard at the Republican convention?…” Senior Democrats took to the stage to praise their new nominee.

“[Trump] is trying to tell us he cares about the middle class?”

As disruptions of the Democratic National Convention by Bernie Sanders supporters continue to gradually peter out on the convention floor, a contingent of Bernie die-hards continues to fight the “Bernie or Bust” fight, but you’d never know it unless you were there. “You’ve got to get in the arena with her, because democracy isn’t a spectator sport”.

His speech had the feel, as well, of a presidential swan song and echoed the early themes of his political ascent. That’s the Hillary I’ve come to admire. “And I watch my daughters, two attractive, intelligent black young women, playing with their dogs on the White House lawn”, she said during a Convention address. But looking at the front pages of Wednesday’s newspapers, you’d think Bill just won again.
