Cruz homers in 5th straight game, Seattle beats Rockies 10

The Seattle Mariners attempt to complete a sweep when they visit the Colorado Rockies for the finale of their three-game interleague series Wednesday afternoon. Nick Hundley drove in Paulsen with a single to right field to make it a one-run game.

Third baseman Nolan Arenado says that what the Rockies do now is important for setting a tone for next season and beyond.

Rockies catcher Michael McKenry blasted a two-out, two-run homer off Mariners rookie Mayckol Guaipe in the 11th to see the Rockies win 7-5 over Seattle.

DENVER (AP) — Once again, Felix Hernandez came back strong after a loss. Colorado won 7-5 in 11 innings.

Until Rodney’s meltdown, the Mariners were positioned for a victory after Franklin Gutierrez’s two-run homer broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning.

Floyd, a first-round draft – 12th overall – out of Notre Dame, caught 47 passes for 841 yards and six touchdowns last season, down from his breakout 2012 year, when he caught 65 passes for 1,041 yards and five scores. “My mindset was just go out there and give the team a chance to win”.

“This kid’s got a little moxie about him”, McLendon said.

“That’s him”, Cruz said. We want a No. 1 starter because he has that kind of ability. “He’s one of the best in the league”.

Although he’s done nothing to shed his reputation for streakiness, Cruz has still solidified himself as one of the top right-handed sluggers in baseball, posting a.323/.387/.597 batting line through 106 games, with 31 home runs and 67 RBI. His first inning was appropriately, um, rocky. He was hitting spots and making you chase around the strike zone.

“Obviously there have been times when we could have called him up earlier in the year”, Wilson said.

Seattle hitters have been loving spacious Coors Field, where the air is thin and balls seem to carry and carry. Charlie Blackmon added four hits, including two doubles.

Seattle jumped on Eddie Butler with a four-run first highlighted by Jesus Montero’s two-run double. He allowed five hits and gave up Carlos Gonzalez’s three-run homer in the sixth but was otherwise dominant. DJ LeMahieu made his first All- Star appearance this summer for Colorado, and he finished 2 for 4 with a run scored this evening.

Rockies left fielder Kyle Parker covered a lot of ground to record the second out of the sixth inning.

The Rockies will limit Gray’s innings for the balance of the season to avoid a stressful increase over his 2014 workload.

Robinson Cano collected three RBIs and Nelson Cruz continued his torrid pace by homering in his fifth consecutive contest.

Rockies RHP Chad Bettis (right elbow) will throw about 15 pitches in a bullpen session Tuesday, his first since he went on the disabled list July 19…. Most recently, Gray is 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA over his last six starts.
