In a statement released Friday night, city officials advised residents that the local community was not at immediate risk, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, but encouraged anyone with respiratory issues to be mindful of increased particulate matter in the air. Firefighters managed to gain 40% containment of the Sand fire, which has caused one death and destroyed 18 homes.
Since the fire erupted Friday morning along Soberanes Creek in Garrapata State Park north of Big Sur, it has spread to land in the Los Padres National Forest, Monterey District.
Cal Fire officials said the blaze had destroyed 20 homes and two outbuildings, while 2,000 structures remained threatened.
More than 3,000 firefighters working around the clock got a break from cooler conditions a day earlier, but forecasters said the rest of the week would bring weather in the upper 80s.
After spending four days outdoors near the Soberanes Fire, a group of backpackers were rescued Tuesday but Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies say their 900 plant marijuana grow wasn’t as lucky.
No injuries, other than one death, have been reported as almost 3,000 firefighters tried to get control of the fire.
But authorities said Tuesday they had managed to contain 25 percent of the area.
Search and rescue crews from the Monterey County Sheriff’s Department, along with the bulldozer operators, evacuated the eight men to a campground.
The name and age of the operator who was killed was not immediately available.
A private contractor operating a bulldozer to help fight the fire was killed on Tuesday when his rig overturned.
It was 3 a.m. Saturday when Van Lear arrived from his home near San Diego and he was pleased to see that the camp’s mobile kitchen and mess tent had been erected and were serving eggs and bacon to famished firefighters, many with soot darkening their faces.

Residents from more than 10,000 homes were forced to evacuate due to the uncontrollable blaze. The massive fire was 10 percent contained Wednesday. As ground teams battled scorching hot temperatures in an effort to control the fire, aerial teams on firefighting helicopters are taking water from the ocean to dump over the flames.
