The team helped clean up and rebuild a park and helped pass out water and other supplies to the devastated communities still feeling the aftermath of the floods, much like the New Orleans community after Hurricane Katrina. “If you haven’t been, you don’t realize just how close you are”, Godby said.

Head coach Sean Payton and many players including Super Bowl-winning quarterback Drew Brees got in on the action. “That sense of urgency is certainly going to exist with our staff and I think our players already understand (the sense of urgency)”. “We’ve got a responsibility to be here and help here and we accept that”, added Harper.

For the 2016 New Orleans Saints, it’s the first practice of training camp at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., as the 50th team in franchise history begins to take shape. The team, one of just two in the National Football League to hold its training camp far from its region, has been spending summers in West Virginia for three years, following Payton’s experience as a caddie at the 2012 Greenbrier Classic. We were just about to conclude on all that, and then I don’t know exactly what happened and everything, but we just drifted away from the heat of the moment to get it done, get it finalized and get the extension in place.

More than 20 people were killed when a flash flood hit the state in late June. “It was really, really, meaningful”, said The Greenbrier owner Jim Justice. They’ve got people who get it and who know what they’re doing… We’re coming no matter what, we’re coming.
