West Nile virus found in Middletown

One case of human infection with West Nile Virus has also been identified in Grand Forks County.

In a news release, district manager Peter Bonkrude said the warmer Northstate weather indicates this won’t be the last positive test of West Nile virus in the area.

“We have just started having mosquito samples test positive for West Nile”, Smith said.

Pasadena operates its own vector control program under the auspices of the Pasadena Public Health Department and is not a member of the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District.

Mosquitoes were collected on July 20, in traps placed at Cortez Park in West Covina (located at Citrus Street and Cortez Street) and at Cal Poly Pomona in traps placed at the northeast, east, and the southern parts of campus. In June, the district detected the virus in dead crows collected in Altadena and Monrovia, according to the statement.

Officials in Dublin said it is not unexpected to see the virus in the area and tends to show up this time of year.

Cronquist says that with all the recent rain, people should drain bird baths, kiddie pools and other standing water from their yards to help keep the mosquito count down.

Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens.

When outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent that contains DEET, oil of lemon, eucalyptus or IR 3535, according to label instructions.

The California Department of Health, CDPH, is reporting increased West Nile virus activity across the state and is now investigating numerous suspect cases in humans.
