Nintendo sinks into loss despite ‘Pokemon Go’ global success

Operating income showcased a $48 million loss for this period compared to $10 million previous year and according to Nintendo, foreign exchange rates impacted by “significant yen appreciation” led to a $322 million loss. The exchange rate averaged 108.14 yen to the dollar for the quarter, a roughly 13-yen rise from a year earlier. Nintendo’s great smartphone play Miitomo hasn’t entirely worked out either, with the smart devices section of the company bringing in just ¥1.6 billion (£11 million, $15 million) for the quarter.

“We regret to announce that the Pokémon GO Plus accessory launch has been delayed”.

CNN Money noted that before Pokemon Go’s release, Nintendo sales over the same quarter a year ago had slumped 31 percent, with a big decline in its Wii U console software and hardware.

The global frenzy over the game has raised expectations for sharp business growth at Nintendo, causing its share price to more than double at one point last week.

Nintendo has invested in Niantic and owns about one-third of the Pokemon Company, which receives licensing fees for loaning out the brand. Optimism about an accessory for use with “Pokemon Go”, which Nintendo plans to release later this year, likely also factored into the decision. Not the best of news when contrasted with the same period from 2015, where the company made a profit of 8.2 billion yen. Its sales tend to be concentrated in the year-end shopping season.

Nintendo is also to launch a new console – the NX – in March 2017. “Pokemon Go Plus” is a device that can be used when playing “Pokemon Go”, which lets players know when Pokemon are around. It set a record in Apple’s App Store as the most downloaded app during launch week and it was responsible for doubling Nintendo’s market capitalization in less than two weeks as investors tripped over themselves to buy shares of the company.

The delay of Pokemon GO Pakistan release date is partly blamed to the unexpected success of the augmented reality mobile game. Wii U sales have been tailing off for a while, and the last couple of months have seen few releases to excite fans. This means you don’t have to stare at your phone while walking around, possibly into a pole. In terms of new features, we can’t really say that Pokemon Go is hitting new levels as it still has the same content plus some minor updates.
