Overall, Kansas City Royals pitchers allowed 22 hits, 4 walks, 1 home run, and 13 earned runs.

Scioscia emerged at once. However, Mondesi was nearing first when Shoemaker was set to throw.

The men argued, calmly for the most part, about 15 minutes with breaks. And then the ruling remained, the umpiring crew stating the judgment call could not be reviewed.

After Santiago left, the Royals did not get a hit off Angels relievers J.C. Ramirez, Fernando Salas, Cam Bedrosian and Huston Street.

Scioscia said he was “100%” confident he was correct on the matter.

“It was very clear”, Scioscia said. It’s only OK if you start in the lane and step back toward the bag. You’re in jeopardy the whole way if you run inside, whether you get to the bag or not. The question wasn’t if he was running inside. According to baseball rule 4.19, a manager can protest when he believes there has been an error made by an umpire during the course of a game.

Because the play involved a judgment call, it was not reviewable. He admitted that [Mondesi] was inside the line.

Naturally, Royals manager Ned Yost disagreed with Scioscia’s view. “It’s kind of a frustrating way to lose the game”. “We’ve definitely got to get back on the right track”. “And we lose the game”.

The bunt was a ruled a hit, the first of Mondesi’s career. Shoemaker regretted even attempting to record an out on the play. Dyson scored on Alcides Escobar’s sacrifice fly.

It both overshadowed and soured the debut for Mondesi, who slotted into the No. 9 spot in the Royals lineup.

Angels: RHP Jered Weaver will start Thursday at Anaheim against the Red Sox, who will counter with LHP David Price. He went 0-for-3. Butera retired Johnny Giavotella to end the inning.

The Angels broke a scoreless deadlock in the fifth, which began with Duffy walking Bandy and Gregorio Petit. Davis walked Albert Pujols with the bases loaded and gave up a run-producing single to Andrelton Simons. It was the sixth straight game the Royals have scored four or fewer runs. Kennedy was charged with four runs, all in the disastrous first, on six hits, four of those in the first.

Perez would score on a subsequent double.

Pujols drove in two with a bases-loaded single during a four-run first, then added RBI singles in the seventh and ninth innings.

Kennedy left after five innings and one batter, throwing 106 pitches. “He was going to be safe anyway. I should have held onto it”.

With the Royals batting in the seventh inning trailing by two runs and with runners on first and second, Raul A. Mondesi landed a bunt toward the mound.

The Kansas City Royals ended a rough 3-6 homestand with a victory on Wednesday night.
