In swimming, world championships have always been a strong indicator of what to expect at the Olympics the following year. If he improves another seven tenths of a second, he breaks the world record.

“I have some motivation from myself and others, and I am just going to go and keep doing what I have been doing”, he added. She also swam the anchor leg on the victorious 800 freestyle relay, giving her five golds with one day remaining in the meet.

Phelps only has one year left in his career and according to him, he really wants it bad enough that he is willing to make the sacrifice.

“It could have been really tiring and it was”, Ledecky said. “I have to be able to balance the energy a little bit better than I did”.

“It was mixed emotions when I touched the wall, it had been on my mind the whole time since Wednesday and I was obviously both delighted and relieved with the win”.

“I have played football all my life and my dad went to see Manchester United in 2005”. He’s dealt with similar comments from other swimmers in the past. But about world records.

Le Clos has made it clear that he’s not intimidated by Phelps – especially after pulling off a stunning upset in that event in the 2012 London Games.

Half a world away in Texas, Phelps swam the 100 fly preliminaries at U.S. nationals in 52.12 on Saturday, hours after winning the 200 fly with his best time since setting the world record in 2009.

“I’m just very happy that he’s back to his good form, so he can’t come out and say, ‘Oh, I haven’t been training, ‘ or all that rubbish that he’s been talking”, said Le Clos. “I’ll relish the opportunity to race him again”. But Phelps doesn’t want to retire, and Laszlo Cseh, someone who has missed out on a lot of gold medals because of Phelps, is still around as well.

“I guess I was out a little slow, ” Phelps said. Caitlin Leverenz was the victor of the 400 individual medley in 4:38.81 and Madison Kennedy won the women’s 50 free in 24.71, ahead of the 24.85 of Amanda Weir. “You have to do the work to get fast times”. Dressel was actually quicker than the 21.55 that Brazil’s Bruno Fratus managed for the bronze medal in Kazan. Grevers also was bronze medalist in the 100 back.

Franklin, the Olympic champion, settled for silver in 2:06.34.
