The force of the explosions shattered windows at Mogadishu’s nearby airport, showering arriving passengers with glass, said witnesses.

“At least 13 people were confirmed to have died in two explosions, one of the vehicles went off near a security checkpoint and another close to a United Nations compound”, said Bishaar Abdi Gedi, a police official.

Al-Shabab released audio through its radio station allegedly of the ex-MP, where he says, “This suicide task we are going to is for the sake of Allah and it is a religious duty”.

Salah Nuh Ismail, also known as Salah Badbado, and an unknown second suicide bomber detonated cars loaded with explosives at the gates of the main base of the African Union (AU) on Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday, Al Shabaab suicide bombers blew themselves at entrance to Mogadishu airport, just some meters away from the African Union headquarters.

Claiming the attack, Al-Shabaab spokesman Abdiasis Abu Musab said both attackers detonated vehicle bombs and that it was targeting the AU force’s headquarters.

Badbado’s suicide auto bomb went off in front of the gates of an African Union (AU) base.

“In Somalia, al-Shabab has aspired since its founding about 10 years ago to rule the country under a fanatical interpretation of Sharia law”.

More than 22,000 peacekeepers serve in the African Union force, which includes troops from Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya, Sierra Leone and Ethiopia.
