Detroit and Boston combined for 22 hits on a night when both starting pitchers struggled.

Red Sox starter Steven Wright gave up a season-high eight earned runs on nine hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Detroit pulled within 5 1/2 games of idle AL Central-leading Cleveland.

“I’m very comfortable with him in a save situation”, Ausmus said of Rodriguez, who has converted 29 of 30 save situations this year and has a 2.63 ERA. “I’m not as fast as I used to be, so it’s just a triple”. Iglesias came home on a single to right by Martinez.

Boston, which had scored 46 runs in its last six outings, failed to homer Monday. After the Giants managed to get just two hits and no runs in the first three innings, they shelled Pomeranz in the fourth inning. Kelly gave up one run on two hits in an inning after not pitching in the major leagues since June 1.

It started in the third when Boston almost erased Detroit’s lead with one big swing by Ortiz.

Dave Dombrowski says he received five new trade offers on Monday: “I can tell you today we’ve received five trade proposals that I hadn’t received before today from other clubs calling me”, Dombrowski said.

Victor Martinez went 4-for-4, including a two-run single with one out in the third that gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead. “I was locating my fastball a lot better“, Pomeranz said. Wright has been the best pitcher for the Sox this year, but it wouldn’t be the case last night.

Boston loaded the bases on three straight singles off Justin Wilson to begin its half of the eighth.

With a 2-1 lead, Fulmer got some defensive help from centerfielder Tyler Collins in the third to keep the Red Sox from tying the game.

Boston’s hitters had several long at-bats against Verlander, pushing his pitch count above 40 through just two innings.

Shaw’s line-drive double allowed Jackie Bradley Jr.to score from first base in the second inning, opening the scoring.

Tigers: OF J.D Martinez (broken elbow) started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday night, going 1 for 5 with an RBI.

The Detroit Tigers didn’t dominate the Boston Red Sox over the last three days. “It’ll just be dependent upon, physically, how Craig feels”, Farrell said. LHP Daniel Norris (right oblique strain) will have his next rehab start in Double-A Erie on Thursday. He thinks the bullpen, which has been battered by injuries, will bounce back when Junichi Tazawa and Kimbrel are back to full strength.

“I thought he threw the ball well against a quality right-handed hitting lineup”, Farrell said.

Dustin Pedroia, who has been on a hot streak, got the Sox on the board early when he knocked his 11th home run of the season to center field. The Red Sox honored him with a video tribute after the second inning.

You have to give credit to the Boston Red Sox for realizing they needed to improve their bullpen and they did that by acquiring Brad Ziegler.

The Red Sox rallied from four- and three-run deficits but were held scoreless over the final three innings in a 9-8 loss to the Detroit Tigers.
