Apple announces sale of 1 billion iPhones

For barely 24 hours earlier, Cook had told investors that iPhone sales had fallen for the second successive quarter (Q3) after recording uninterrupted growth since its introduction in 2007. “I see the smartphone itself, led by iPhone, becoming even more instrumental and important to people’s lives”, Cook said.

Reaching a billion iPhones sold is a monumental accomplishment, but Apple faces slumping sales and stalled momentum as we approach the introduction of another iPhone in September. “We never set out to make the most, but we’ve always set out to make the best products”, said the CEO this morning. “Thank you to everyone at Apple for helping change the world every day”. Apple yesterday announced that it sold just 40.4 million iPhones in its most recent quarter, a drop from 47.5 million during the same quarter past year.

Apple reported sales of 40.4 million units of the iPhone for the quarter, compared to 47.5 million units in the third quarter of the previous fiscal year, which is equivalent to a 15 percent decline. Surprisingly, iPad had an impressive roll out, with Apple selling 9.9 million, as opposed 4.9 million a year ago.

Apple hasn’t revealed who or where the one billionth iPhone was sold. In 2014, Google announced a worldwide base of over 1.4 billion Android devices-multiple phones and tablets, including the Samsung Galaxy, LG G series and others, but hasn’t updated the number since.

Apple Inc recently unveiled their third Quarter earnings and it indicated the company is going through a huge revenue fall.

But good news for Apple, the most valuable public company in the world, has been rare of late. Apple is expected to follow up next year with a significant redesign to mark the iPhone’s 10th anniversary. And not only did Apple reach that goal easily, it quickly became apparent that the iPhone itself was a juggernaut, a once-in-a-lifetime product that would forever change the way we interact with technology.
