In addition to that, Musk has now alluded to opening one of only four Gigafactories of the world, in India.

Meanwhile, minister of road and transport Nitin Gadkari also paid a visit to Tesla’s manufacturing facility in the USA, where he suggested Musk to set up a production facility in India.

“We are laying the foundation for battery construction, which is probably the biggest constraint” to the success of the Model 3 and future Tesla vehicles, Chief Executive Elon Musk said during a media tour of the factory Tuesday.

The move has been a long time coming.

Tesla hasn’t made the endeavor alone, as it has a $1.6-billion agreement with its long-time battery-cell supplier Panasonic, with the Japanese now fitting machines and production robots in sealed, humidity-controlled rooms. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also visited the Tesla factory while on his trip to Silicon Valley a year ago.

American electric carmaker, Tesla Motors has hinted at expanding its manufacturing bases in the future and it might consider setting up a Gigafactory in India.

If the Model 3 is produced in volume with no major hitches, and sells as well as Tesla hopes, some of that pressure will ease. With more than 1,300 units sold during Q3 2015, China is set to overtake the United States as the largest vehicle market for Tesla. The cost for building the factory premises has reportedly been estimated at $5 billion.

Tesla’s first Gigafactory will officially open on July 29 in Nevada in the United States. Telsa wants to complete the factory by 2020 and switch to 100% production mode.
