United States is at a ‘moment of reckoning’: Hillary Clinton

“He wants to divide us from the rest of the world and from each other”, Clinton told the Democratic convention, mocking Trump’s claim that he alone can “fix” the country.

Hillary Clinton took the stage minutes later to become the first woman to accept the presidential nomination of a major United States party.

Despite Sanders giving his endorsement in his own speech at the convention this week, one of her challenges ahead of the November election is to appeal to the group of his supporters who say they will not support her. She praised Sanders for his campaign on Thursday, highlighting its appeal to young people and efforts to promote economic and social justice.

“I tell you without reservation or hesitation that Hillary Clinton will be exactly the kind of commander-in-chief this country needs”, Allen said. “Your cause is our cause”. After his disastrous comments suggesting that Russian Federation hunt for the deleted e-mails of the former secretary of state, Trump spent much of Thursday attempting to convince the country that it was just a sarcastic crack.

“It’s true”, she said. Chelsea painted a picture of someone who is, essentially, the anti-Trump; someone who is in politics because she so ardently wants to help others, especially those who can’t help themselves.

Along with his fulsome endorsement of Clinton, Obama joined with Wednesday’s other speakers in blasting Trump. Both candidates suffer from negative perceptions among voters, as revealed by multiple polls during the past year.

Meanwhile Clinton, known for guarding a zone of privacy around her, was unusually candid. The FBI concluded Clinton’s actions were “extremely careless”, but did not warrant criminal charges.

Democrats in the Wells Fargo Center – including most of Sanders’ supporters – were ready by week’s end, however, to put the division and the street theater behind them.

Added CNN commentator Van Jones: “I remember when ‘U.S.A., U.S.A.’ was considered a exclusively Republican chant”. “I personally thought that it would have been a worthwhile thing to sort of make at least an oblique acknowledgment of that issue”.

“We will not build a wall”, Clinton said. And we’ll build a path of citizenship to millions of immigrants who are already contributing to our economy.

“We must work with all of our allies who share our goal of destroying ISIS and stamping out Islamic terror”, he said. Donald Trump can’t even handle the rough-and-tumble of a presidential campaign.

“I was moved by how many times she said ‘together, ‘ that no one person can do it, we have to do it together”, said Charlie Rose on CBS.

In a message to his 10.4million followers he said: “Hillary’s refusal to mention Radical Islam, as she pushes a 550 per cent increase in refugees, is more proof that she is unfit to lead the country”.

“I think she has work to do, and I think the party has some work to do to convince us that not only are they going to live up to that platform the party passed, but that they’ll work with us”, said Donna Smith, executive director of Progressive Democrats of America.

“No major party nominee in the history of this nation has ever known less or has been less prepared to deal with our national security“, Biden said.

Introduced by daughter Chelsea after a canned video montage narrated by Morgan Freeman, Clinton came out onstage and quickly started yelling.

The Republicans, too, have a warned that a Clinton presidency will make permanent the liberalization of American life- and of its Supreme Court- that they staunchly oppose.

Clinton’s speech was a reflection of her: direct, to the point, a summation of the challenges she’s tackled over a lifetime. She spoke of “hard times that tested us” in her marriage, which she apparently got through by having a 45-year long “conversation” with her philandering husband Bill. And the line worked not only because it so perfectly captured Trump but because the convention’s previous speakers had done such a good job arguing that her motivation isn’t ego.

“The conventions were early this year, you’ve got the Olympics coming in August”, Kondik said. “There aren’t a whole lot of persuadable people out there still”.

Her convention managed to simultaneously, if not always comfortably, gather everyone from left-wing, anti-war activists and four-star Marine generals to union leaders and US Chamber of Commerce lobbyists in the same arena.
