Hillary Clinton accepts historic nomination, turning focus to take on Trump
Hillary Clinton, 68, stood victorious in white onstage at the Democratic National Convention on July 28, and gave her rousing victory speech after officially accepting the party’s nomination.

During her speech, Clinton made a direct appeal to Sanders’ supporters, pleading, “I’ve heard you”. “We are clear-eyed about what our country is up against”.
Investments in clean energy, infrastructure, new jobs and free college tuition for most college students at public universities will be her top priorities, Clinton said. The DNC included the left-most wing of the Democratic Party (Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren) but also erstwhile Republicans like Michael Bloomberg and former Reagan advisor Doug Elmets. “He wants to divide us – from the rest of the world, and from each other”.
“A man you can bait with a tweet is not a man you can trust with nuclear weapons”, she sliced.
And while she granted credit to President Barack Obama for digging the country out of a deep financial crisis, she also acknowledged that Democrats haven’t done enough to connect with the working class. “I just don’t want you to be shot by someone who shouldn’t have a gun in the first place”.
“Most of all, don’t believe anyone who says: “I alone can fix it”. “A bold agenda to improve the lives of people across our country – to keep you safe, to get you good jobs, and to give your kids the opportunities they deserve”, Clinton said.
In presenting herself as the unity candidate she was able to put further ground – as if it wasn’t there already – between her and Trump.
Campaigning in Iowa Thursday, Mr. Trump said there were “a lot of lies being told” at Ms. Clinton’s convention.
– Times of India (@timesofindia) July 29, 2016We heard @realDonaldTrump’s answer last week. Powerful forces are threatening to pull us apart. “No wonder people are anxious and looking for reassurance – looking for steady leadership”. Hillary knows she needs all Democrat supporters to get behind her and she made it clear she was for working with Sanders, rather than against her one-time rival.
“When there are no ceilings, the sky’s the limit”, she said.
“Trump makes that choice very easy for most Democrats”. ” at several speakers, including retired Marine Corps General John Allen and former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta”. Police officers and firefighters who run toward danger. And I don’t want someone to think that I got a job because I was a woman, I want someone to think that I’ve got the job because I’m the best person for the job.
Lacking Obama’s sweeping rhetoric or the “feel-your-pain” sensitivity of her husband, Clinton leaned into her wonky image, saying: “I sweat the details of policy”. That key word “together” popped up twenty times during her speech. She repudiated Trump’s proposal to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the US – a suggestion he’s since revised – and instead said she would work with allies to defeat terrorism. Clinton’s expansive embrace of anyone who rejects Trump created a contentious convention where left-wing delegates shouted “no more war!”. They both garner high “unpopularity” ratings. “It’s a guiding principle for the country we’ve always been and the future we’re going to build”. Trump has portrayed the country as being under siege from illegal immigrants, crime and terrorism and as losing influence in the world.
“We are going to build a great border wall to stop illegal immigration, to stop the gangs and the violence, and to stop the drugs from pouring into our communities”. Khizr Kahn, a Muslim whose son was one of 14 Muslims killed while serving in the military since the September 11, 2001, attacks, drew cheers when he pulled out a pocket copy of the US Constitution and said he wanted to show it to Trump.
This may have been the best speech that Hillary has ever given.
“Ask yourself: Does Donald Trump have the temperament to be Commander-in-Chief?” But here’s the sad truth: There is no other Donald Trump.
We looked back at his speech, and Trump really did say this.

“What nearly always happens when the more centrist candidate gets the nomination, is that voters get the choice between two evils”, said David Meyer, professor of political science at UC Irvine.
