Olympic gold medal not a given for USA Basketball

This year’s roster includes popular and familiar names from the National Basketball Association, such as New York Knicks small forward Carmelo Anthony, Los Angeles Clippers center DeAndre Jordan, Golden State Warriors small forward Kevin Durant, and Warriors shooting Klay Thompson, just to name a few.

Durant also added five assists, as did the Knicks’ Carmelo Anthony and the Raptors’ Kyle Lowry. Joining him in the scoreboard was fellow Warriors teammate, Klay Thompson, who scored 17 points on 10 shots. Two other China players were drafted in the second round of June’s draft: Houston’s Zhou Qi tallied two points and five fouls, while Memphis’ Wang Zhelin scored one point in 22 minutes. He said the minutes eventually won’t be distributed as evenly as they were in the first two games but he’s waiting to see how well different combinations mesh.

Team USA also saw strong performance from DeMar DeRozan, DeMarcus Cousins and Kyrie Irving, who were all in double figures.

USA, warming up for a run at their third straight Olympic men’s basketball gold, romped to a 106-57 friendly victory over China on Sunday (Monday in Manila).

Team USA vs. Team China will be televised by NBA TV and will be available to watch online on the USA Basketball Facebook feed.

For Gong, who coached China at the 1996 Olympics, it was a 20-year-old replay with different names in the USA scoring column. Yi is an outstanding player, but the other guys-I was impressed with China’s ball pressure and denial on defense.

Meanwhile, Olympic play begins on Saturday, Aug. 6, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Stephen Curry opted out of the Olympics this year, so Durant has become the adopted Splash Brother filling in for his new teammate.

With many top players turning down a chance to throw on the Stars and Stripes, the USA squad are more “B Team” than “Dream Team” but are nonetheless a frightening collection of talent capable of providing Olympic-size nightmares for opponents.
