BREAKING: We have one suspect in custody.

The officers were members of a gang suppression unit and were shot by unknown gunmen at a traffic stop on Thursday evening.

The slain officer, a husband and father of two children, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died early Friday, Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said.

Both officers were rushed to the hospital. The four-year police department veteran and Marine reservist had just bought a meal for a child and was fatally shot by a suicidal man who pulled up alongside his cruiser on University Avenue at 45th Street on August 6, 2011. Police asked residents to shelter in their homes.

The pair’s names have not been released.

The two officers had pulled over a vehicle about 11 p.m. somewhere in the area of Acacia Grove Way and 38th Street. Other officers quickly responded to the scene and found the two officers suffering from gunshot wounds.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that police said the shooting occurred late Thursday night.

The incident comes amid high tensions in the United States after the death in July of five policemen assassinated in Dallas, Texas, and three others killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Nearly immediately afterward, they called for emergency backup, Zimmerman said. The San Diego Police Department gave an update on the officers on its Twitter account, but offered no additional details.
