Whether you upgrade for free or buy Windows 10, you should get the Windows 10 Anniversary Update for free when it rolls out on August 2nd. You know that because you’ve been getting pop-ups about it for ages, or possibly your computer has already installed Windows 10 without you even asking it to do so. Microsoft explains a little more about what you can expect from the next Windows 10 update. Activate that installation and magic will occur: your key will become Windows 10 “enabled”, and you should be able to use it to perform the upgrade at a later date.

Anybody who purchased Windows 10 Pro under an Academic Licence will see the upgrade happen automatically. They’re all aggregated conveniently for you. The update will add new features to the Cortana virtual assistant, new stylus support with Windows Ink, and increased cross-platform functionality with the Xbox One gaming platform. The only way to get the Windows 10 Anniversary Update is to have the current version of Windows 10 installed by then.

Microsoft’s latest operating system has simple user interface compare to Windows 8.1, which is quite hard to use. After July 29th – just a year after the company started giving out free upgrades – it’s ending.

There are plenty of reasons not to want Windows 10, though. If you decide in a week, if you decide in a year, you will be paying to move to Windows 10, so why would you not take advantage of this today, for free.

Eligible devices include tablets and PCs running Windows 7 or newer. That way the system can be locked down without having to worry about employees (or students) downloading Windows Store apps. The lag is fueled partially by disappointing Windows 10 phone sales, and by customers reluctant to let go of older versions of Windows. Many accused the accompany of making the process of declining the upgrade offer in its “Get Windows 10” app needlessly hard and confusing.
