When the two other “mid-major” party candidates-Libertarian former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Dr. Jill Stein-are added to the mix, Clinton regains a slim quarter-point lead over Trump.

Pre-convention, independents split 34 per cent Clinton to 31 per cent Trump, with sizable numbers behind Johnson (22 per cent) and Stein (10 per cent).

Mr Trump fell back in the poll as he feuded with party bosses over comments he made about Hispanics, Muslims and immigrants, but he rebounded this month as his candidacy took the national spotlight at the Cleveland convention.

But it’s not. It’s mid-July, and Donald Trump’s job at the Republican National Convention last week was to put himself in a stronger position to win the general election All signs are that he did just that, as Silver’s site has his chances decidedly on the rise. 62% of them support Trump compared to 23% of them supporting Clinton.

Trump’s surge is considered a “convention bounce”, a term used to describe the bump in support for presidential candidates after their party’s convention. Results for the sample of 882 registered voters have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

A CBS poll, also released Monday, though, shows a deadlocked race and no post-convention bounce for Trump.

The first was conducted Friday through Sunday and found Trump and Clinton in a near-tie.

“Any objective observer will conclude that – based on her ideas and her leadership – Hillary Clinton must become the next president of the United States”, Sanders told delegates, spurring a cascade of cheers. And almost half now say he’s in touch with the problems ordinary Americans face in their daily lives (46% say so, 37% did before the convention).

Clinton’s favorability is now 32 percent, her worst rating in CNN/ORC polling.

As for Clinton, her backing has grown since just over a week ago.

Those positives for Trump come despite some sharply negative reviews for the convention itself. Most of that was the independent vote, but overall it suggests that the race may become binary in voters’ minds more rapidly than perhaps first thought. Here are the RCP averages for each state, how they are trending, and the post-convention averages. But all four of the Republican’s adult children later addressed the crowd, and many credited them with saving the convention.
