Turkey’s education board orders 1577 university deans to resign after coup attempt

Under the terms of the Turkish constitution, lawmakers in the 550-member parliament have to approve a request for a state of emergency.

A day after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a three-month state of emergency following last week’s failed coup, Steinmeier said it’s important that “the rule of law, a sense of proportion and commensurability are preserved”.

But despite the rising tensions in recent days, the Turkish president said Ankara must continue its solidarity with America – and insisted the issue of Gulen’s extradition needs to be separated from the Pentagon’s use of Incirlik airbase in the fight against Islamic State.

Turkey’s government said the attempted coup in which rogue elements of the military attacked the parliament, presidential palace and other state institutions, was organized by followers of USA -based cleric Fetullah Gulen.

Mr Erdogan said regional governors would receive increased powers under the state of emergency, adding that the armed forces would work in line with government orders.

Turkey has also cut access to WikiLeaks hours after the leaking of thousands of e-mails from Erdogan’s ruling party – many of which were sent in the run-up to the coup attempt. Gulen, who has many followers in Turkey and overseas, denies the charge.

The Turkish government has previously banned access to websites deemed to be carrying material critical of Turkey, including YouTube and Twitter.
