Trump Officially Introduces Pence as Vice President Pick

The joint appearance was meant to catapult the party toward a successful and unified Republican National Convention, which kicks off in Cleveland on Monday.

The comparison with the late Reagan is a clear appeal to make Trump more palatable to conservatives alienated by Trump’s rhetoric and populist message. With Pence, he get’s an elder statesman of the Republican party, who can help him procure the votes he may have alienated. The rumors were that he was still deciding between New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, Newt Gingrich, and Pence.

The Indiana governor has been a longtime advocate of trade deals such as NAFTA and the Trans-Pacific Partnership, both aggressively opposed by Trump.
