NOTES: The Mariners called up Cuban OF Guillermo Heredia from Triple-A Tacoma prior to Friday’s game and optioned LHP David Rollins to Triple-A Tacoma.

TORONTO – Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion and Troy Tulowitzki hit solo home runs in the first inning, Marco Estrada snapped a four-start winless streak and Toronto beat Baltimore.

Hisashi Iwakuma (11-7) had won his last five starts, but gave up five runs and eight hits in three innings.

The Seattle Mariners and the Chicago Cubs battle in an interleague tilt at Wrigley Field. That was far too late to provide any benefit to the Mariners, who trailed by 11 runs at that point.

Jon Lester recovered from a rut of bad starts, pitching six shutout innings for the Cubs’ third straight win.

Everything before that was pretty grim, although the Mariners avoided a shutout on Shawn O’Malley’s two-out RBI single in the ninth inning against former teammates Mike Montgomery.

Friday’s game was delayed for one hour, 14 minutes in the middle of the seventh inning as rain swept through Chicago.

He has gone 3-4 since and the Cubs are 0-4 in his last four starts while Arrieta has a 5.55 ERA in those games. Together, this was a key moment not just for the game in isolation, but hopefully for Heyward on the whole. The Cubs then squandered Kris Bryant’s one-out double later in the inning. He singled twice, doubled and walked twice.

Success against the fastball is nothing new for the Cubs this season as they have 204 extra-base hits against the pitch, fourth-best in the majors.

“Tremendous job, threw the ball downhill, little breaking ball”, Servais said.

Those 11 runs, by the way, marked the Cubs’ highest total of the season at Wrigley.

“It’s about as nice as you can get”, he said. That’s just the way it is.

The loss dropped the Mariners to 51-50 with two more games remaining in Chicago before they return to Safeco Field for a 10-game homestand – the longest of the season. But we’re excited to be here. He struck out in the eighth.

Chicago Cubs’ David Ross, right, scores past Seattle Mariners catcher Chris Iannetta on a single by Chris Coghlan as Iannetta tries to get Chris Coghlan at second during the second inning of a baseball game Friday, July 29, 2016, in Chicago.

Mariners: RF Nelson Cruz returned to the lineup after fouling a ball off his shin Tuesday.

Coming Next: The series continues tomorrow afternoon at 1:20 pm CT on CSN and 670 AM with Jake Arrieta (12-4, 2.76) taking the mound against Wade Miley (6-8, 5.23).

ATLANTA – Tyrell Jenkins earned his first career victory, pitching six innings and helping the Atlanta beat Philadelphia. Arrieta is 0-1 with a 4.63 ERA in three games (two starts) against the Mariners, but he hasn’t faced them since 2012.

Jenkins, acquired in the November 2014 trade that sent Jason Heyward to St. Louis, began the game with a 6.43 ERA and 26 base-runners allowed in his first three career starts, a span of 14 innings.
