Magnitude 7.7 quake strikes in Pacific, no tsunami: USGS

The impact of the quake has been restricted to the Marianas islands. Major Earthquake hit Northern Mariana Islands at a magnitude of 7.7 on Richter Scale.

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands lies about 5,800 miles south-southwest of California’s Pacific shore.

A major 7.7 natural disaster has struck in the Pacific Ocean but was not expected to trigger a tsunami, the US Geological Survey and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

There have been no reports of injuries or significant damage after a magnitude 7.7 quake struck the Northern Marianas this morning.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center measured the preliminary magnitude of the quake at 7.7 but said it struck at a depth of 203 kilometers (126 miles), which will significantly minimize its effects. No tsunami warning was issued. For updates stay tuned.
