Some were hoping for more of an effort to bring Sanders supporters into the party that is backing Clinton.

Donald Trump fired back at Hillary Clinton a day after she accused the Republican nominee of being too thin-skinned to have control of the country’s nuclear arsenal, saying she “doesn’t know how to win”. So let me tell you. “Your cause is our cause”.

“To drive real progress, you have to change both hearts and laws” Clinton said.

In her acceptance speech, Clinton praised Sanders for his campaign, its appeal to young people and its call for economic and social justice. Mrs Clinton and Mr Trump are set for an election battle widely considered to be a tight race when voters head to the polls in November.

He said that his son would never have been able to serve the United States had Trump been the President. “Then deal me in”, she shouted, along with numerous delegates inside the Wells Fargo Arena.

Trump had boasted last week that “no one would watch” the Democratic National Convention and hailed the ratings of the Republican convention on Twitter.

He said on Wednesday there had never been a man or woman more qualified than Clinton to serve as president.

She is the first woman nominee of a major United States party and told the convention that the achievement was special “for grandmothers and little girls and everyone in between”.
