Russian Weightlifting Team Banned From Rio Olympics

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced on Friday that Russia’s eight-member team would not be allowed to compete at the Rio Olympics.
“We would like to highlight the extremely shocking and disappointing statistics regarding the Russian weightlifters”, said a statement by IWF.
United World Wrestling, the governing body, defended their decision, saying more than half of those tests had been properly processed by the Moscow anti-doping laboratory.

The federation chose to organise the three-hour competition after the Court of Arbitration for Sport last week rejected athletes’ appeals against the IAAF ban.
World Rowing, meanwhile, has barred 19 Russians, most for insuffient tests. Testing in Russian Federation does not count under International Olympic Committee rules because of the repeated allegations made against Russia’s drug testing agency and national lab, both of which have been suspended. This is the case in rowing and some other sports.
The village has 31 buildings with 3,604 apartments for the athletes.
The IOC will select the host city in September 2017.
“The [Russian Weightlifting] Federation will do everything in its power to rehabilitate us, but it is impossible to do it before the Olympics; there is no time to do anything”, Russian weightlifter Aleksey Lovchev told RT, commenting on the IWF decision.
Russian weightlifters will not be allowed to compete at the Olympics after the International Weightlifting Federation elected to ban them from the upcoming Games.
