The deaths of the three Baton Rouge officers came amid a spate of law enforcement officers killed, including five at a protest in Dallas, two at a courthouse in MI and a Kansas City, Kan., police captain shot and killed Tuesday while responding to a reported drive-by shooting.

Long was killed in a shootout with police after killing two Baton Rouge police officers – Montrell Jackson and Matthew Gerald – and one officer of the East Baton Rouge sheriff’s office – Brad Garafola. There will be no graveside service, but there will be a processional from the church to Greenoaks Funeral Home.
On Thursday, one of the officers wounded in the ambush, East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Deputy Bruce Simmons, was discharged from the hospital.
Among those killed were Garafola, 45, who worked as a sheriff’s deputy for 24 years.

Graves said the Louisiana delegation also is working on finding federal money enough to cover the expenses incurred by Baton Rouge law enforcement during the protests and events following the police shooting of Alton Sterling on July 5.

Only days before his killing, one of the slain officers, Jackson, had written a Facebook post expressing how hard it was for him to be both a black man and a police officer. But the money should help pay some of the bills of the spouses of the officers who were gunned down by an assassin after tense weeks following a police shooting of an African-American man.
As the nation debates race and policing, this community of about 10,000 is mourning three of its sons – all husbands and fathers described by friends as being committed to protecting and serving the public. “We just said a prayer in the vehicle for the families”.
Officials say Long deliberately sought out officers.
During the briefing Monday, Mayor Dabadie referred to the criticism authorities in Baton Rouge have received for the aggressive police response to protests that erupted there after Sterling’s death.
The Sunday morning ambush left three officers dead and three others injured. Video shows bullets hitting the concrete around him, Gautreaux said.
Bonnette says Miles wanted to express his support and discuss his appreciation for the courage police show in putting their lives on the line to protect their communities.
Carl Woodley, Long’s stepfather, said he was in “total shock” about the Baton Rouge shootings.
A research report on the department’s website says that “although PTSD is associated with a risk of violence, most people with PTSD have never engaged in violence”.
It was the actions of SWAT team and “militarized” police tactics that stopped the gunman from killing more people, Baton Rouge police said. “You get what I’m saying?” Just days earlier, one of the slain officers had posted an emotional Facebook message about the challenges of police work in the current environment. “It’s the chilling and the shear brutality of the shooting”, Col. Edmonson said. He was a Marine and Army veteran and will be buried in the Louisiana National Cemetery in Zachary, La. Gerald had joined the police department just four months prior to the incident Sunday.

Back at the fitness center, Deputy Nicholas Tullier, 41, had just got back in his patrol auto to run the tag of the Malibu when Long emerged in the parking lot, Gautreaux said.
