Tim Kaine’s convention speech: 5 moments that made a splash on Twitter

After the Hillary Clinton campaign claimed earlier in the week that their new vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine had changed his position on taxpayer funding for abortion, Kaine contradicted them Friday and stated that he hadn’t.

Alas, as has been noted 50 million times or so, this is not a normal election year.

“Hillary Clinton has vast experience in governing, and trying to make sure the government solves problems and does the right things for people”, he said.

Over the course of three days, Clinton and Kaine will cover more than 600 miles across Republican-leaning Western Pennsylvania and Eastern and Central Ohio, tailed by a second bus carrying staffers, their Secret Service details and three busloads of reporters and television producers. The tour will take them through Rust Belt hubs like Pittsburgh and Youngstown.

Clinton’s speech focused on job creation, raising wages, and fighting economic inequality.

Making a direct pitch to lower-income and middle-class Americans, Clinton pledged to focus on areas of the country “left out and left behind”, and “places hollowed out by plant closures”. “Same old stuff, our country needs change!” “And I tell ya, if any of you are looking for that party of Lincoln, we’ve got a home for you right here in the Democratic Party”, Kaine said.

Much like former President Bill Clinton’s speech last night, Kaine talked about how he met his wife, Anne, in college, using the speech as an opportunity to introduce himself to a national audience.

The Clinton campaign plans to kick off next week with an organizing event in Omaha, Neb.

Trump is also focusing on OH and Pennsylvania, as states where he might make headway with blue-collar white men. “But as he’s made clear, he is committed to carrying out Secretary Clinton’s agenda”.

“Most people, when they run for president, they don’t say ‘believe me, ‘” he added.

Not long after, the intrusion into a system used by the Clinton campaign came to light, first reported by Reuters.

“I will be a President for Democrats, Republicans, and independents”, Clinton said on Thursday night.

Kaine, for his part, delivered a fast-talking and folksy summation of the voters’ choice as he sees it. I said, ‘You’re insane!

New Jersey also might have been on Trump’s mind because its current governor, Republican Chris Christie, was among Trump’s finalists for the vice presidential nod that ultimately went to Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.

“First, she’s consistent. She has battled to put kids and families first since she was a teenager”, Kaine said.
