Gabriella will helm the project with a script by Pamela Gray (“Conviction”) with rewrites by Annie Mumolo (“Joy”), Tim Lovestedt and Jordan Roberts (“Big Hero 6”), reported Ace Showbiz.
The film will be titled “Megan Leavey” and production will kick off in October. Marine and hound were deployed to Iraq for two separate tours from 2004 to 2006 and they are credited with saving hundreds of lives from roadside bombs.
The Megan Leavey biopic is a follow-up to Gabriela acclaimed documentary “Blackfish”, which focuses on Tilikum, an orca held by SeaWorld and the controversy over captive killer whales. She spent the next five years waiting to adopt Rex, who remained on active duty.
In 2012, Rex was retired from duty and scheduled to be euthanized, but Leavey fought for him, and he was allowed to live with her in Rockland County until his death. Another of Rex’s handlers, Mike Dowling, wrote a book about their work, entitled Sergeant Rex: The Unbreakable Bond Between a Marine and his Military Working Dog.
