Russia to appeal blanket ban on weightlifters for Olympics

Individual sport federations must rule on whether Russians can compete in Rio following the country’s doping scandal. More than 100, however, have been barred – including the track and field team banned by the IAAF and more than 30 other athletes rejected under new International Olympic Committee eligibility criteria.

Tests conducted by the Russian anti-doping agency, which is suspended following repeated allegations of cover-ups, are not considered valid for Olympic purposes.

Kovacs, who also won 40 medals in world championships, including 30 golds, had a daughter in 2014 and said she wanted to spend more time with her family.

The IOC does not want the Olympic name sullied by proven allegations of state-sponsored doping, nor does the WADA want Russian Federation to stop giving it generous donations.

The International Weightlifting Federation has banned the Russian federation and all its weightlifters from the Rio Olympics.

“We ran into such injustice when they took away the Olympic Games from us, but, as I said yesterday, it will only make us stronger”, Isinbayeva said in a statement.

“They didn’t admit me for the Olympics in Rio”.

“I have, however, received a considerable amount of reliable evidence, which clearly implicates individual athletes in the state-dictated program described in the report”, he said.

All of Russia’s weightlifters were banned from the Rio Olympics on Friday for doping for what the worldwide federation called “extremely shocking” results that brought the sport into ” disrepute”.

The new IAAF president has already banned 67 of 68 Russian track athletes.

The IOC has taken fierce criticism for not ordering a blanket ban on Russian Federation after an independent report said there was state-organized doping at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.

So the opening ceremonies for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are Friday, and six days out, and still nobody knows how many Russians will be allowed to compete.

The Swimming Canada boss is reluctant to put pressure on any of the 27 athletes in Canada’s swim team, but says there are a couple of names to watch for.

“The Russian Weightlifting Federation will be barred from recommending, entering or participating with athletes and Technical Officials”.

“The city recognises that the PPP contractor most likely has two primary objectives, maximize land value and deliver venue obligations at least cost”, the International Olympic Committee said in one of the documents assessing infrastructure plans for the Games, seen by Reuters using a freedom of information request.
