The events that led up to the shooting around 11 p.m. Thursday were not immediately detailed. It’s still not known whether or not the incident started with a traffic or pedestrian stop, Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said.

The shooting follows the killing of officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge.

Asked whether the shooting was an ambush, the chief said it wasn’t clear.

San Diego police have surrounded a house located about a half mile from the site of a gunbattle that left one officer dead and another seriously wounded.

The San Diego Union-Tribune says police are reporting that the shooting occurred late Thursday night.

Kepner said he called his cousin to see if she was ok and braced for the worst. Gomez is still in the hospital, said Patch.

Nearly immediately afterward, they called for emergency backup, Zimmerman said.

While closely tracking fatalities is valuable, they say, increases over a brief period shouldn’t be confused with the larger trend: shootings of police have declined dramatically since a high in the 1970s, driven in part by changes in policing, such as the use of body armor.

DeGuzman and Irwin were patrolling in uniform and in a marked vehicle as part of the city’s 10-team Street Gang Unit.

DeGuzman’s colleague Officer Wade Irwin, 32, a veteran of nine years, was injured in the attack but he’s expected to survive after undergoing emergency surgery.

Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said in a Twitter post that she had left the hospital where the injured officer had come out of surgery and that he’s expected to survive.

Police arrested a second man, 41-year-old Marcus Antonio Cassani, on an unrelated warrant. They surrounded a house the man was in and eventually took him into custody after a standoff. He has not yet been charged. The man was convicted of attempted murder on a peace officer in 2004.

The state also keeps track of officer deaths, with numbers dating back 25 years. He is also married and has a young child.

“I personally worked with him when I was a lieutenant at Mid-City Division”, she said, according to Fox 5. I know him. And this is gut-wrenching. “And last night he lost his life trying to make a positive difference and trying to protect our community”.

DeGuzman served with distinction during his years on the police force.

Jonathan DeGuzman was a 16-year veteran of the department who received the award after getting stabbed in the shoulder by the man.
