Bryant singles to stop Miley’s no-hit bid

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) – The San Francisco 49ers signed former Stanford guard Joshua Garnett to a four-year deal Friday, finally getting the last of their 11 draft picks under contract. In Friday’s opener, the Cubs blew out Seattle 12-1.

The only real drama, after the Cubs struck for five early runs, was whether heavy rains in the Chicago area would stay away long enough for the game to become official. While the Mariners really struggled in June, Felix Hernandez was just activated off the disabled list and Walker could soon follow, potentially setting up a late run at the postseason.

But Miley outpitched Arrieta, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the Mariners (52-50) rallied from a 1-0 deficit by beating flame-throwing closer Aroldis Chapman and his array of 100 mph-plus fastballs. He allowed a season-high tying five earned runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out a pair. Karns, 28, is 6-2 with a 5.15 ERA in 22 games (15 starts).

– Texas second baseman Rougned Odor hit two home runs in the Rangers’ 8-3 win over the Kansas City Royals.

Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Steve Cishek (31) throws against the Chicago Cubs during the ninth inning of an interleague baseball game, Saturday, July 30, 2016, in Chicago.

Lester (11-4) yielded four hits in six shutout innings before the Cubs went to their bullpen for Justin Grimm. Reynaldo Lopez (0-1, 11.57) will make his second career start with the Giants turning to Jake Peavy (5-7, 5.42), who will try to find some consistency. Chicago led 1-0 and still had runners at first and third with one out.

Miley has lost six straight starts, but he has recorded quality starts in his last two outings and three of his last four. Chicago then loaded the bases with none out as rain arrived, but not before Rizzo cleared the bases with a three-run double down the left-field line for a 9-0 lead.

It probably didn’t matter, but Rizzo didn’t appear to tag up of Heyward’s foul fly to left against Nuno before scoring when Franklin Gutierrez stumbled over the bullpen mound. Plate umpire Eric Cooper also needed a clean look, and with Baez lingering outside the batter’s box, shoved the player out of the way. That ended the inning. They scored their final run in the seventh inning, after play resumed, against Tom Wilhelmsen. They now hope to collect their first victory in the Lone Star State when Vancouver plays FC Dallas in a Major League Soccer game Sunday. He’s hitting.296/.325/.439 with 12 home runs, 47 RBI, 49 runs scored, and a league-best 26 stolen bases in 391 plate appearances this season. With Norichi Aoki and the top of the order due up, it was a perilous situation for the Cubs, but Rondon induced a groundball to Kris Bryant at third, who fired home to Miguel Montero, who tagged Guillermo Heredia for the inning’s second out (+.215).

It was all Chicago after that. He gave up a single to Shawn O’Malley in the ninth for the Mariners’ run. Bryant broke up the no-hitter with a single.
