One of the two women was later captured wounded, the İstanbul Governor’s Office said. No one else was injured in the onslaught.

Then, around 6:45 a.m., assailants opened fire at security forces who were guarding the damaged police station, Anadolu reported.

In previous years, Turkey’s police stations, government buildings, political parties and the courthouses have been targeted by left-wing organisations, while the US consulate in Istanbul and American embassy in Ankara were hit by both leftists and Islamist militants.

Another police officer was killed after Kurdish militants opened fire on a military helicopter.

Security has been tight in Turkey since it joined the fight against the Islamic State, or ISIS, last month.

In the attack on the police station in the district of Sultanbeyli, a auto bomb was detonated, injuring 10 people, including three police officers.

Last week, a U.S. drone carried out its first strike on Islamic State from Incirlik air base as part of a joint effort to clamp down on a 70-mile stretch of the 565-mile Turkish-Syrian border that the group’s fighters control.

Meanwhile, two armed individuals early today launched a gun attack against the well-fortified US consulate in the quiet district of Istinye on the Bosphorus on the outskirts of Istanbul. Violence between the security forces and suspected militants also intensified in the mainly Kurdish southeast.

Following Monday’s attacks, opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu said the violence must end immediately.

The U.S. Embassy stated U.S. officers have been working with Turkish authorities to research the incident.

A group also reportedly threw stones at a local branch of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in the wake of the attack. The military said more than 260 militants, including senior PKK figures, had been killed and more than 400 wounded by August 1. He said the diplomatic site would remain closed “until further notice”.
