The scorer will hang Arrieta with the loss, and the Cubs have not won an Arrieta start in almost two months, but the eye test suggests that Arrieta is trending upward.

Aroldis Chapman’s famous fastball wasn’t good enough to retire Leonys Martin.

If Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto is indeed shopping Miley, he certainly couldn’t be more pleased with the veteran southpaw’s performance on Saturday at Wrigley Field.

The Mariners added another run in the ninth.

Making his third appearance for the Cubs since he was acquired from the New York Yankees, Chapman allowed Martin’s double to left-center on a 99.6 miles per hour pitch, which put Seattle ahead 2-1. After swinging wildly at a first-pitch 100 miles per hour fastball, Martin watched a 101 miles per hour fastball go by for a ball. RHP Cody Martin was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.

“We had the right up guy up there”. “We had the Cuban against the Cuban”. “He has put good swings on velocity all year”. “It’s hard not to put Chapman’s name after those guys”. Then Martin had a great at-bat off Chapman.

Kris Bryant has been Chicago’s only baserunner, reaching when third baseman Kyle Seager booted his one-out grounder in the fourth for an error.

“I was just able to locate the fastball early on”, Miley said of his performance.

Fresh off Wade Miley’s flirtation with a no-hitter, his name is being thrown around in rumors as Monday’s Major League Baseball trade deadline nears. “I tried not to think about it”. After Dexter Fowler walked to lead off the seventh, Bryant broke up the no-hitter with a single to center.

“I was try to expand with a changeup”, Miley said.

Arrieta faced 26 hitters, giving up only the two runs scoring on Chapman after he departed the game. Following a Ben Zobrist bunt that advanced the runners, Javier Baez hit a grounder to third. O’Malley fielded the ball and threw home. Home plate umpire Lance Barrett called Fowler out at the plate.

Fowler initially was called out, but the call was reversed by replay. Miley was making multiple pickoff attempts to first base. The 30-year-old allowed a three-run blast to Todd Frazier – the fifth homer he has allowed in his last five starts after surrendering just three in his first 15 outings of the year.
