“It is not known whether he hit the tree on his bike or whether he came off his bike prior to hitting the tree”, said the spokeswoman. “He was airlifted to St George’s hospital and is in a serious condition”.
“I saw the air ambulance landing”.
The second crash took place at just before 11am near Thames Ditton and that cyclist was also treated by air ambulance paramedics before being taken to a London hospital.
Some participants and spectators took to social media to report on the accidents. “Apparently air ambulance on the road up ahead”.
“A planned contingency route from West Byfleet to Ripley is now being opened and the riders will now be directed down that route”.
Dom Cotton tweeted: “Bad RideLondon crash nr Ripley…” Three air ambulances and countless ambulances.
Shortly before noon, RideLondon tweeted: “The route from West Byfleet to Ripley has been now been re-opened to riders in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100”.
A diversion was put in place for several hours and a backlog of cyclists formed, prompting organisers to cut the route by 26 miles to get participants to the finish line on time.
