‘Game of Thrones’ to end with eighth season

Game of Thrones received 23 Emmy nominations for its sixth season this year. This leaves only two more seasons for the show.

The end of the hit fantasy drama has been rumored for awhile.

“Yes, I think [Benioff and Weiss] have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do”. “Believe me, being the new guy, if I could get them to do more, I would take 10 more seasons”.

The HBO chief also confirmed that the delay in production on Season 7 would take “Game of Thrones” out of the Emmy race next year, but Bloys wasn’t anxious about interrupting the show’s awards momentum, noting that while “it’s always better to win more Emmys. that’s not our main goal”, since it’s more important to the network and Benioff and Weiss that they maintain the show’s quality and integrity.

It was announced earlier this month that the series’ seventh season next year will have only seven episodes- a departure from the 10-episode schedule of each of the previous six season.

The number of episodes for season eight, has not yet been decided, however producers plan a total of 75 episodes for the entire series. Also, he confirmed the later production start date for next season will make the series ineligible for Emmy awards in 2017.

Obviously, since “Game of Thrones” is one of the most popular and award winning shows on television, HBO would want to keep viewers coming back to Westeros for years to come.

Yet, it appears Benioff and Weiss’ vision has won out.

That doesn’t mean it’s the end of the Game of Thrones-iverse.

HBO’s chief of programming, Casey Bloys, said that he hopes to see the show “up and running by September or October”, which will be a critical time for a politically-themed show from a guy like Jon Stewart to come out.

“It’s something I’m not opposed to, but of course it has to make sense creatively”.
