Pirates roll past Dodgers to finish sweep
Andrew McCutcheon continued to torch the Dodgers going 2-for-5 with four RBIs, a two-run home run and a run scored. Johnson has a 29.45 ERA with the Dodgers. Juan Uribe and Daniel Murphy hit home runs for the NL East leaders.

Jimmy Rollins had three of the Dodgers’ six hits and drove in two runs. The right-hander allowed three runs, and two of those men reached base via base on balls. And a loss, his second in three nights.
Gray (12-4) allowed just one run on five hits.
Brewers rookie Tyler Cravy (0-3) was the loser.
The Pirates are 7-2 in their last 9 games following an off day and 7-3 in Lockes last 10 starts. He has allowed three runs or fewer in all but one start.
NEW YORK – Lucas Duda provided the offensive power, accounting for all of New York’s runs over Washington on Saturday before 42,996, the second largest crowd in Citi Field history.
If Pittsburgh can pick up the sweep over the Dodgers, it proves they might be the best team in the National League.
Pinch hitter Brandon Moss grounded an RBI single to left in the bottom of the ninth as St Louis squeaked past Colorado. Jim Johnson (3-4) was charged with eight runs in two-thirds of an inning. They’ll have Gerrit Cole and Francisco Liriano in that series and will have a great opportunity to make up ground in the division.
Pirates: Swing Early. Wood is prone to giving up a lot of hits as he has allowed 10 hits three times this season, and those have all been over his last seven starts.
Philadelphia erased a 3-0 deficit, getting home runs from right fielder Domonic Brown, first baseman Ryan Howard and left fielder Cody Asche. They don’t go out there and throw zeroes on the scoreboard in every start. Pittsburgh is one of the best in the Major League Baseball in terms of steals, swiping 73 bases.
Pittsburgh has won 43% (19-25) of its games when leading after 7 innings.
Polanco homered to lead off the bottom of the first inning for the second straight game, also connecting off the Chicago Cubs’ Dan Haren on Wednesday night.
By then, the Pirates were back in front, 6-4. Since the All-Star break, Pederson is batting.
It went into extra innings. Puig went 0-for-9 in the first two games of the series and was 3-for-22 (.158) over his first seven games in August…. He finished 2 for 4 and is 5 for 12 with three RBIs in three games since the A’s acquired him off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.
1 run, 1 hit, 0 errors, 2 left on.
Lester (7-8) gave up two runs and six hits over seven innings.
The Pirates went on to beat the Dodgers 5-4 in 10 innings. Coming into the game, Wood had a career ERA of 3.14 and has been worth at least one win above replacement every season he’s been in the bigs. He walked Ortiz with two outs before striking out Pablo Sandoval.
Lorenzo Cain doubled home the go-ahead run in the sixth. He struck out seven and walked two. The move worked, as Tolleson struck out Jesus Montero to end the inning.
Torii Hunter hit a ninth-inning homer to lift Minnesota past Cleveland, ending the Twins’ five-game losing streak.
The sweep will feel pretty hollow, though, if the Pirates pull up short of the regular season finish line to position themselves for a wild-card game that could unravel just as quickly as Johnson did.

Angels 5, Orioles 4 – David Murphy’s bases-loaded single in the 11th inning sent Los Angeles to a victory over visiting Baltimore. The Pirates are 16-36 in the last 52 meetings in St. Louis and 5-1 in the last 6 meetings overall. The game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start time and it will be televised nationally on ESPN.
