Just ahead of the expected arbitration award, though, the two sides finally came to terms on a four year deal.

The Colorado Avalanche and defenceman Tyson Barrie avoided a contract arbitration ruling by signing a four-year, $22 million USA contract on Sunday. He had 53 points and was a plus-5 the season before. The deal will pay Barrie an annual average value of $5.5 million per season, a significant jump from the $2.6 million on his previous contract.

A third-round pick of the Avalanche in 2009, Barrie has 153 points in 264 career National Hockey League games.

Last season, Barrie posted 13 goals and 49 points in 78 games, but his plus/minus numbers took a serious hit as he finished with a minus-17 rating. Scoring 13, 12, and 13 goals in the last three seasons respectively, while also boasting solid awareness and durability, Barrie is the type of player that all 30 teams in the National Hockey League would love to have. While four years only buys out one year of Barrie’s unrestricted free agency years, it allows both the team and player to re-assess their respective situations while Barrie is still in his prime and the Avalanche should be in their most competitive window.
