Sanders, who battled Clinton in the Democratic primaries, said he’s known Clinton since she was first lady nearly a quarter-century ago.
The Democratic National Committee issued a statement Monday afternoon, offering a “deep and honest apology to Senator Sanders, his supporters, and the entire Democratic Party for the inexcusable remarks made over email”.
Bernie Sanders as more of a nuisance than the legitimate presidential candidate he was.
Sanders endorsed Clinton and was set to deliver a key address for her as the convention convened yesterday in the eastern city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Obama in a departure from the political attacks on display all day – made the case that, because of her character and temperament, Clinton is the role model she’d like her daughters to see in the Oval Office.
“I stand with my Democratic family in making sure we win this fall”, said Maine lawmaker Diane Russell, a Sanders supporter. It came at a crucial moment for Clinton’s campaign, on the heels of leaked emails suggesting the party had favored the former secretary of state through the primaries despite a vow of neutrality.
Sanders tried to head off the disruptions, sending an email to delegates as the convention opened urging them not to interrupt the proceedings.
According to party rules, Sanders won’t be able to secure the nomination.
She’ll take a page from Trump’s book in doing so.
President Bill Clinton, watching from the audience, leapt to his feet and applauded, as did most of the delegates filling the convention arena.
Retired Gen. John Allen, who led the war in Afghanistan, will also be among the night’s marquee speakers.
“We’re all Democrats and we need to act like it”, U.S. Representative Marcia Fudge of OH, the convention’s chairwoman, shouted over the uproar.
She said, “Don’t let anyone ever tell you that this country isn’t great”.
The meeting was held shortly before Monday’s start of the party’s convention.
Campaigning in North Carolina, Trump seemed to revel in the Democrats’ commotion, telling supporters that Clinton made a mistake by not choosing a more liberal running mate to appease Sanders’ base. “Crazy Bernie’s going insane right now”, he said.
Bernie Sanders says Hillary Clinton will make – in his words – “an outstanding president”.
Trump was a frequent target throughout the night, though the jabs were often more mocking than mean.

Inside, delegate chants of “Lock her up” and “Hillary cheated” are getting louder and angrier. The anger boiled over Monday as Wasserman Schultz was met by boos at her home state’s delegate breakfast. Critics have stated that this scandal reflects the existing split between the Democrats, and that it bodes ill for the party’s chances in the general election. She did not appear at the convention podium and later watched the proceedings from a private suite.
