Cleveland Browns struggle with ball security on day one of camp

While talking about how comfortable he is with the other quarterbacks, he quipped, in reference to the 40-yard dash: “Obviously there’s one of us that runs a 4.3”.

“I’m just happy that Hue and Sashi and the owner (Jimmy Haslam) have given me an opportunity to show people that’s not who I am”. Rather than getting chemistry down with multiple quarterbacks, Cleveland’s offensive players can now focus on excelling in their new offense without the extra drama and speculation of who will be their quarterback. They place a higher value on the quickness of these players whose straight line speed is often the attribute more talked about, and place a high value on a drill, and time, that reflects these skills.

Griffin will compete with veterans Josh McCown, Austin Davis and rookie Cody Kessler for the top gig. Friday marked the first of 11 practices the Browns have on their schedule before their August 12 preseason opener at Green Bay. “He has taken the steps that I think, at least at the outset, that he should rightfully so to make something that was very wrong into a right”.

“You definitely get that sense of need to do something important with your life and with my career”. “You’ve done your studying, you’ll continue to do your studying, you worked hard, you’ve run, you’ve lifted, all those things”. That just comes with the territory with me being who I am, considering my past. I think the only way to deal with a player in these situations is to kind of hit the restart button for him and he has to go do it. Like I said, the league has said what their expectations are.

If Griffin is named the starter, he’ll have his former college wide-receiver on the team.

Gordon was suspended for the first 10 games of 2014, played the next five and was suspended by the Browns for the final game of the season for violating a team rule.

“For us it’s about Josh wanting to make a change, and having the opportunity”, Brown said. “It’s a kid’s game that we get to play for a king’s ransom”. “We are going to go through a process here pretty soon, it’s going to show itself”.

“I was hoping he would appeal for like one game”, Thomas joked. You name a guy and move forward, and everybody gets behind that guy. “I trust his leadership on that”.

“I know him really well”, said rookie receiver Corey Coleman, who, like Gordon, went to Baylor.

The 6-foot-2 Griffin had a rather unspectacular workout. McCown made some plays but will have to do more to overtake Griffin, still knocking off some rust after not playing last season.

Griffin would seem to be the leader at the moment.

If Griffin and Gordon look somewhat close to their old forms, and if Jackson performs as a coach the way we expect him to, and if the offseason moves pay off, the Browns could find themselves finally out of the AFC North cellar, and if all of these “ifs” can come together, the Browns bold offseason could be remembered as what finally turned around the NFL’s saddest franchise.
