Air France warns of flight cancellations due to strike

The company also cancelled 25 percent of European flights to and from Paris Charles-de-Gaulle airport and 15 percent of domestic flights.

The airline warned that last-minute cancellations and delays were possible.

So far the strike has affected around 150,000 people, the airline said.

The airline said the strike has also cost tens of millions of euros and 20 percent of its flights are grounded, RFI reported.

Apparently Air France flight attendants don’t feel they may have a responsibility to polish the image for France to be a safe and working travel destination.

For security reasons there must be one flight attendant for every 50 passengers on board. Millions of people are returning home from their July holidays as many more set off for an August break.

Unions representing around half of the strikers last Friday said the stoppage would go ahead as marathon talks failed to reach a breakthrough on renewing a collective labour accord on rules, pay and promotions that expires in October.

Management want to limit the extension of the agreement to 17 months, whereas unions want between three and five years.

Earlier projections had shown that more and more flights will be affected by the strike as more Air France crew were expected to join the action.

Air France was dealing with a pilot strike in June, just as the Euro 2016 football championships got under way.

Air France estimated that stoppage cost it some €40-million or $45 million (about R648-million at R14.14/$).
