Padres’ RHP Paul Clemens exits with apparent injury

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Homer Bailey made his 2016 debut on Sunday against the San Diego Padres, after undergoing Tommy John surgery in May of 2015.

The Cincinnati Reds lead most of the game against the Padres, and got a strong start from Anthony DeSclafani, but couldn’t close out the win.

Before Rosales’ walk-off homer, second quiet night at the plate threatened to waste Christian Friedrich’s first quality start since June 12.

“I think he’s gonna be fine”, Padres manager Andy Green said. “At that point in time I guess I thought better of leaving him in the game”.

Eugenio Suarez singled and Jose Peraza followed with a home run into the second deck of the Western Metal Supply Co., building. He retired 14 consecutive batters during one stretch and had six strikeouts. The 28-year-old native of SC made a spot start at St. Louis on July 20, yielding three runs and four hits – two homers – in five innings of a loss.

“That definitely calms you down a lot – gets rid of the nerves and tension, especially being the first start in the big leagues”, Rondon said through an interpreter.

“I’ll be ready for my next start”, Clemens said. After Peraza popped out, Barnhart hit the come-backer that caromed off Dominguez’s foot toward third for an infield single that scored Duvall.

The Padres loaded the bases with one out in the eighth.

After the third walk to Blash, a disappointed Bailey let his guard down and Wil Myers swiped home without a throw. Bailey was then lifted after 89 pitches. After throwing ball four to Schimpf, Bailey took the return toss from Barnhart and turned away from the plate without time being called.

Right-hander Blake Wood replaced Bailey and struck out Bethancourt to end the threat. Padres RHP Erik Johnson, who has been on the disabled list since July 1 with an elbow strain, likely won’t pitch again this season. While hoping to avoid surgery, his rehabilitation will linger into the offseason.

It is also worth noting that with the Padres recently shipping starters Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea to Miami, the club can ill afford to lose another arm for an extended period of time.
