Samsung maintained its lead as the dominant mobile-phone handset maker, helped by the release of new units, while Apple lost ground as consumers halted on purchases of iPhones.
The world’s leading smartphone manufacturer, Samsung declared that its April-June net income rose 2% over-a-year earlier to 5.85 trillion won ($5.17 billion), paralleled with 5.75 trillion won a year earlier.
Samsung’s mobile division saw its operating profit jump 57% in the second quarter from a year earlier to 4.32 trillion won. Ltd reported its second quarter earnings with 18.06 percent operating profit hike compared to one year ago, same period.
The firm also reported bumper sales of its low- to mid-range smartphones during the quarter, namely the Samsung Galaxy J. Multiple new product launches from vendors including Samsung Electronics and Apple could see an improving growth outlook for the second half of the year.
Smartphone vendors shipped a total of 343.3 million smartphones worldwide last quarter. The South Korean tech giant generated $7.22 billion in operating profit on revenue of $45.2 billion.
Samsung approximations of its shipped smartphones are between 75.6 million and 78.3 million during the quarter, which is about twice as many as Apple’s 40.4 million iPhone sales. Reviewers raved about the S7 and S7 Edge smartphones, and the S7 Edge is widely considered the best Android smartphone on the market – possibly the best ever made. It has said it plans to strengthen its high-end line-up, while “maintaining solid profitability” of its mid to low-end products.
Amid growing demand for solid-state disks for computers, stocks were very tight at the end of the second quarter, but demand is expected to be stronger in the third quarter, the company said. Sales gained 4.94 percent to 50.9 trillion won, Samsung said in a regulatory filing. That’s a 4.9 percent jump from this time past year.

The Note series has never had as much of a sales impact as the S-series smartphone, and there will be increased competition with a new iPhone set for release later in the year.
