Story out of Rockies’ lineup vs Mets with jammed thumb
The Mets have been hesitant to call-up Herrera without having consistent playing time available to him, but with so many injuries in the infield, the Mets could have a spot for him in the lineup almost everyday.

New York Mets Asdrubal Cabrera is carried off the field by coaches and a trainer after he limped across the plate, scoring on a Neil Walker first-inning triple, during a baseball game against the Colorado Rockies, Sunday, July 31, 2016, in New York. The Rockies would tie it up in the top of the second on an RBI single from Daniel Descalso, but the Mets built a 3-1 lead on the strength of RBI singles from Alejandro De Aza in the second and Brandon Nimmo in the third.
The Mets took their 1-0 into the second inning, but it did not last for long. Right-hander Addison Reed allowed one hit in the eighth before Jeurys Familia notched his 37th save with a ideal ninth. “I don’t know if it will be a reality, but we’ve certainly got to be careful with it”, Collins said before Cespedes sat out the Mets’ series finale against Colorado.
Despite the loss, the Rockies finished their seven-game east coast road trip at 5-2 and the month of July at 15-12, their first winning month that was not April since August 2012.
Gonzalez tried to score from third with two outs in the fifth on a pitch that got past Rene Rivera, but plate umpire Jeff Kellogg ruled the Mets catcher made the tag in time as both players dove headlong toward the plate. Cabrera appeared to hurt himself taking his first step after touching third base, after which he hopped and slowed down dramatically as he hobbled home, putting little weight on the left leg. He had to the helped off the field by the training staff and did not return.
This time the role of hero was played by Neil Walker, whose three run homer in the seventh inning helped the Mets (54-50) defeat the Rockies (51-53) 6-4 to snap a four game losing skid. Rain has delayed the start of the final game of the two teams four-game series. Rockies SS Trevor Story (jammed left thumb), who left in the fourth inning of Saturday night’s game, did not play Sunday. It looked like Gonzalez had scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch later in the inning, but he was called out, a call which replay failed to overturn. “I was definitely safe”.
Wilmer Flores shifted to shortstop in place of Cabrera, while Kelly Johnson entered the game at third base. RHP Jon Gray (7-4, 3.94 ERA) pitches for the Rockies, looking to improve his 4-0 record at Coors Field.

Rockies right-hander Chad Bettis gave up three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings. Verrett has never faced the Yankees.
