Trucker arrested in crash that killed 5 in western Nebraska

A semitrailer truck driver has been arrested on suspicion of motor vehicle homicide following a crash that killed five people and injured six others Sunday on Interstate 80 in western Nebraska.

The State Patrol says the accident happened at 12:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon involving a semi-truck traveling westbound on I-80 when it struck a van. The force of the collision pushed the semi and van into three other vehicles.

Several people were taken to area hospitals, she said, but additional details about the extent of their injuries were not yet available. Three of the six were later flown to hospitals in Colorado.

Weekly was taken to Sedgewick County Hospital in Julesburg, Colorado.

The names of the people in the van who were killed and injured have not been released.

A multiple vehicle fatality crash on westbound I-80 near Brule in Keith County has closed a portion of Interstate 80.

Both east and westbound lanes of I-80 were initially closed and traffic was diverted onto U.S. Highway 30 at Big Springs and Ogallala.
