Special voters pave way for the 3rd of August

Voters who will be visited at their homes include the elderly and those who are unable to visit their voting stations due to their physical or medical condition.

COMMUNITY protest action delayed the casting of special votes on Monday in six municipalities, although a majority of voting stations opened on time in what the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) said was a smooth beginning for the polls.

The IEC said it had put in place all the necessary measures and was confident the process would go smoothly.

The reasons for the delay included vehicle accidents involving IEC staff, incorrect ballot papers delivered to voting stations and community protests.

“If you’ve not applied don’t even bother because officials won’t assist you”.

“On Wednesday they will be brought back to their respective voting stations to be counted and also to verify if the special voter is indeed registered in that voting station”.

“There are 4,300 voting stations in operation today and‚ except for Ward 1 in uMzimkhulu‚ no other incidents have been reported so far‚” he said. “The officials of the commission have over the past few days procured sites where these materials would be securely kept for utilisation on voting day”, read the statement. The stolen ballot papers where quarantined and black-listed using their serial numbers. “We are working together with the police and other law enforcement agencies to prevent this from happening”.

All South Africans have been urged to go out in great numbers to cast their votes on Wednesday. “The Electoral process provides voters with a platform to express their will by electing individuals that they believe will best represent their interest”.
