Monsoon floods kill at least 52 in India

Twenty-six deaths have been reported in eastern Bihar due to drowning and home collapses in 10 districts bordering Nepal.
Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said one person each died at Kalgachia in Barpeta district, Dalgaon in Darrang district and Lakhipur in Goalpara district.
Staff Reporter GUWAHATI, July 31 – The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) today demanded an assistance of Rs 1,000 crore for the State to help it mitigate the disaster caused by flood and erosion.
NDRF, SDRF and Indian Army are helping the district administration in evacuating the marooned people to safer places. “If more fund is needed, we are there and we will help in every possible way”, he said. The Bihar government has declared two districts – East Champaran and Muzaffarpur – flood hit, according to PTI. The official also said food, drinking water, and tarpaulin, among other necessities, are being provided to the needy. The state government has deployed 112 medical teams to treat sick people in the flood-affected areas.
Crops spread over 3.39 lakh hectares have been affected even as the quantum of loss was under assessment.
Major rivers in the state including the Koshi, Gandak, Bagmati and Ganga are in spate following heavy rains, officials said.
With flood water gushing into fresh areas, more than 2000 villages are completely submerged in water. “Duliajan’s Dilighat recorded the highest at 60.2milimetres of rain, followed by Nemati Ghat with 56 ml of rainfall”, said an official.
In Uttar Pradesh light to moderate rain fell in many places even as major rivers Sharda, Ghaghra and Rapti were flowing at unsafe levels or above it at different points in the state.

In Odisha, where at least 32 people have lost their lives in incident of lightning strikes in the past two days, heavy rainfall and thundershower coupled with gusty surface wind are likely to lash several parts due to a low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
