Rain, and more rain, threatened the afternoon start that would see the world’s best, Novak Djokovic, the man who has been No1 for over two unbroken years and would be playing in the 14th final of his last 15 Masters, go for a record 30th title at this elite level of the men’s tennis.

Djokovic, a 12-time grand slam champion, will now turn his focus to the Rio Olympics, a tournament he has yet to conquer. “I have had plenty of success in this particular category of events, and I’m very grateful for that because I always value them as much as I value Grand Slams”.

He will face World No.1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia, who defeated Frenchmen Gael Monfils in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in Saturday’s other semi-final match.

“I had too many unforced errors especially during important points”, Nishikori said.

“I’m glad that I managed to use that part of my game as a weapon today because Kei is one of the best returners in the game, he’s one of the quickest players, so I had to serve well”. “His serves and returns were great, and I felt pressured”, said Nishikori.

After his quarterfinal win over Tomas Berdych, Djokovic admitted, “Things are not clicking 100 percent, but, I’m moving on and hopefully it’s going to get better”.

But Nishikori fought back to take the Swiss to a tie-break which Nishikori eventually won 8-6.

Nishikori was caught on the back foot in the early stages as Wawrinka secured an early break of serve, only to lost it in the ninth game of the opening set.

The top-seeded Serbian, however, saved three set points and then won the second set without any hiccups to advance with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 victory.

“He raised his level a lot from a couple of days ago”, said Nishikori, who earns $383,690 and 600 tour points for finishing second.

“I try to kind of open myself to whatever is coming my way and try to understand that each day is an opportunity to really right the wrongs from yesterday”, Djokovic said.

You can join us on Sky Sports 3 HD from 6.25pm in Toronto, the ideal opportunity for both Djokovic and Nishikori to get back on track after their respective struggles. “I played a point at a time. So I tried to play more, you know, patient”, Nishikori said.

In the doubles final, Croatia’s Ivan Dodig and Brazil’s Marcelo Melo topped Britain’s Jamie Murray and Brazil’s Bruno Soares 6-4, 6-4. He never looked back, finishing off the set in 31 minutes. Recently, unfortunately, the Bryan Brothers pulled out of the Olympics, further diluting the talent that will be on display in Rio.
