SPRINGFIELD, N.J. – Jimmy Walker’s victory at the PGA Championship propelled him into one of the automatic qualifying spots for the United States’ Ryder Cup team with four tournaments remaining to decide the team.
Sports fan Lowry got his mind away from golf by attending the Carl Frampton fight in Brooklyn on Saturday night before moving onto CT, where The Travelers Championship will be played at TPC River Highlands this week.
And Harrington is serious about taking in other sports.
Make that a big smile after he posted a 5-under-par 65 Saturday in the third round of the PGA, the best score among morning starters. I played great that week.
Today, Harrington will not be shy about chatting to Lowry.
“If it hangs in the top 10 it certainly pushes me up in the FedEx Cup play-offs, which will be nice to know my schedule”.
He had won three major championships in two years, including the 2008 PGA Championship.
“Very much so, ” Harrington said. It comes and goes. I really don’t know a pro who isn’t.
“I think this 67 was better than the previous two so I just hope I can pick up some timing with my long game”. “I saw Davis this week and I told him, ‘Man, I’d love to be on your team.’ Haven’t played that well this year, but I feel like there’s still time for me to play good at the end of the year and have a chance to get on the team or get the nod to be picked”.
“Table tennis, gymnastics, diving, velodrome, boxing; I’m sure I’m missing out on one or two, ” he said.
He’s not ready yet for the carpet slippers, but is not reluctant to dispense advice where he feels it might be helpful. I couldn’t get my eye around the place. “I have two weeks off and then, barring the real me showing up, I can’t expect anything and don’t expect anything”.
Hatton finished his fourth round particularly strongly as he sunk birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to secure his top 10th berth. But Mickelson said he’d like to see Hazeltine in advance.
“I’m going down there to try and win”.
Walker, 37, won his first Major with a nerve-shredding par at the 72nd hole, after world No 1 Jason Day closed to within a stroke thanks to an eagle at the last.
“But you talk about expectations, it’s a very odd game”. “It’s annoying at the minute but you’ve just got to keep working at it”.
This week is a prelude to the Rio Olympics, and Harrington has his fingers crossed that everything goes well, on and off the course. “That’s going to make a difference who you want to partner with”.
“My preparations, it’s all about getting that right”.
– Farewell, Baltusrol and the 98th PGA Championship.
Walker’s remarkable display was underpinned by his steadiness and calm demeanour as he led the championship after each round.
At the time, Harrington, now 44, was one of the top-ranked players in the world. Six under is probably a good return on the week, although it’s obviously not good enough.

“I played great, I really did. Anybody can win”, he said.
