Padres trade Matt Kemp to Braves for 3B Hector Olivera

Kemp is a defensive liability who is no longer a threat on the base paths, but it’s a good bet that he will, at the very least, be more productive that Olivera moving forward.

The Atlanta Braves have found a trade that liberates them from third baseman Hector Olivera, who has been serving an 82 game suspension which ends august 1. Atlanta has the worst record when you talk about baseball.

A major-league source with knowledge of the negotiations indicated earlier this afternoon that a deal sending Kemp to the Braves was not close, meaning that the deal came together quickly over the last couple of hours.

Kemp, 31, was traded to the Padres, from the Dodgers in 2014, where he spent the first eight years of his career. Understandably, the Padres immediately designated Olivera for assignment as they do not want any part of his previous behavior; he will now either be released, claimed off of waivers, or sent to the minor leagues.

“We like the Kemp trade and we like the dynamics of the Kemp trade”, Braves president of baseball operations John Hart said.

The Braves acquired Olivera last summer in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who signed him to a six-year, $62.5 million contract before the 2015 season. The 31-year-old Olivera is owed $28.5 million overall through the 2020 season.

Kemp’s power numbers are impressive this season with 23 home runs and 69 RBIs. (Blue Jays) as players the Padres have traded during this season. He has a pending court date in Alexandria, Virginia. San Diego agreed to pay the Blue Jays $17,275,410, including $1,825,410 this year and $15.45 million next year – matching his entire 2017 salary.

San Diego will give the Marlins $2,171,257 to cover most of the $2,539,617 remaining in Cashner’s $7.15 million salary this year.
